PBA: Rain or Shine protest fails to meet deadline as Salud defends controversial call

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters intended to protest their Saturday loss to Barangay Ginebera San Miguel. Unfortunately for them, their complaint came just a little bit too late.

"Rain or Shine filed its protest out of time," PBA commissioner Chito Salud said Sunday during halftime of the Meralco Bolts versus Air21 game.

PBA rules states that any team that wishes to put a game under protest has until 12 noon of the next day to do so.

After the game, ROS owners Raymond Yu and Terry Que both expressed their disagreement with the call. Head coach Yeng Guiao formally announced that they will be protesting as he made a statement in the press room.

With two seconds left in the game, Beau Belga challenged Mac Baracael’s last-ditch effort to win the ball game for Ginebra. Belga partially blocked Baracael’s shot, but referee Quilinguen called a foul. The contact that merited the foul was Belga touching Baracael’s off hand after the ball was already released.

Another issue raised by the ROS management was the time left after the said foul. The referees conferred and decided there was only 0.3 seconds left. However, the replay showed that the contact happened with still 1.3 seconds left on the clock, which would have given the Elasto Painters a better shot at winning the game.

Ginebra went on to win 101-100.

Salud then defended the referee’s decision on the controversial call, saying, “The contact made by defender [Beau] Belga on the shooter [Mac] Baracael, was spot-on.

“The referee made the correct call.”

The PBA commissioner also added that the time left for Rain or Shine was correctly tabbed at 0.3 seconds and not 1.3.

“Time will be stopped when the whistle is blown, not at the point of contact,” Salud explained. “There was no technical error committed in this game and we are thus upholding the results. Ginebra won the game.” - CLP, GMA News
